Testing
Testing
as an activity within the Software Development lifecycle has been
here for as long as software development itself. Its only
really been since the early to mid 1990s and in particular
the turn of the century, however, that we have really seen a distinction
of testing in its own right.
Testing
is really at the early stages of it's development as a profession
with it's own tools, methodologies and training (especially recently
with ISEB). Junction70 has taken the development of this practice
further by integrating other processes that complement and add value
to the overall service that a client would expect. We appreciate
that the client may not always have this resource internally available
for us to call on. If, for example, we have a performance test engagement,
we will also include our network or build division to give greater
depth and feedback in the results.
We
cover the full software lifecycle (including development and live
deployment) in test coverage. We can deliver your strategy, your
plan or just the execution stage. For more specific details of the
services we deliver please click on a link or contact
us here.
User
Acceptance Testing (UAT)
"Let's
get a few business users anyone will do and get them to test the
basic business/application processes
.". For many this
is UAT. At Junction70 we see UAT as one of the most crucial stages
not just of testing but of the whole development lifecycle. Junction70
will simulate an environment as near to the actual environment (or
in fact use the live environment 'pre-production') to ensure any
issues found at this stage are real issues. If the product in question
will have a large user base we are able to test on multiple environments
with our 'quick build and test' solution as well as using resources
offshore.
For an example of a real life environment simulation, we delivered
a project that had one of its sales channels via Digital TV. We
created a living room where our tester watched normal TV (say a
football match) with food and a drink. During the breaks they were
then tasked with checking an online balance, conducting a transaction,
etc. This simulation also had a full video set-up so that we could
capture real usability issues and show them to developers and managers.
We were able to capture real issues that, if done traditionally
and 'inside the box' would never have been spotted until the product
went live with little or no sales being generated via that channel
as a result.

Performance
Testing
"Tools,
tools, tools
" Is performance testing all about what test
tool you use? No. It's amazing just how quickly companies are willing
to commit to using a Performance Tool. We are not against this if
the situation calls for it. We have delivered projects using LoadRunner,
Segue SilkPerformer, Compuware's QALoad, Rational's TestManager
and others including freeware (if applicable). However there are
sometimes shortfall's with using the tools, and some research we
have done suggests that they do not always represent the real life
workload as seen across the network. The company you choose needs
to have a real in depth knowledge of capacity planning, network
topology, various software architectures, etc, to be able to give
an independent but informed opinion. Junction70 has that knowledge.
If you are about to deploy a website how do you predict likely usage?
How do you calculate how many people will concurrently be using
a particular service? Just because 500 people visit a website per
hour does not mean you will have 500 concurrent users.
What does Standard Deviation mean? How will this change if your
process does not follow a normally distributed Bell Curve pattern?
How should you capture performance requirements? What should you
include in your analysis?
At Junction70, we not only partner with some of the best test tools
companies but we also have trained engineers who understand reliability
metrics, network traffic, PC build performance variables, etc so
you can be assured that the results we provide give you the whole
picture.

Automation
Mercury,
Rational, Compuware, Segue, Radview - who do you use? What functionality
is available? Can test automation really deliver what it promises?
Well for a start you may want to read a white paper written a few
years by one of our Test Experts http://www.qadownloads.com/ftp/misc/papers/toolcomparison.doc
We will be bringing you more in depth research that will help
you to make an informed choice. How many companies have delivered
a complete end to end process from automated requirements capture,
test management, test automation (including unit level) through
to performance testing. We have seen out of the box solutions and,
yes, they can work! We have delivered them. How many companies have
good development, test experience and use of automated tools?

help deliver your Automated Test Strategy.
Functional
Testing
Functional
Testing is the mainstay of the testing market. With so many architectures
and environments, it's important that you get a company that not
only has experience of testing applications across these environments
but has experience in building them. Web based, client/server, mainframe,
Unix, Windows Server, Thin Client, PC configuration, Java based
technology - the list is endless. Unit testing, system testing,
database testing, network testing, operational acceptance testing,
disaster recovery -. Junction70 has been involved and has resources
available to ensure that your applications are fully tested end
to end and top to bottom.

Web Testing
E-business
is with us to stay despite the internet boom and bust at the turn
of the century. The staff at Junction70 have worked on some of the
largest projects of those years as well as projects now and have
an in depth knowledge of what contributes to a good e-business website
and infrastructure. From basic html pages to full n-tier architectures.
E-commerce and web based applications are one of the most fast changing
technologies and, with this, comes very demanding test requirements.
How do you conduct usability tests with a potential audience of
billions? Which user groups should you represent? How do you test
that your site does not discriminate against the disabled? What
about performance tests, security, fraud tests? How many platforms
should you test against?
Contact us here to find out how we can
help deliver your Web Test Strategy.
Test Mentor
Sometimes
going on a training course alone is not enough. You would like to
learn hands on for a few days, weeks or even months. At Junction70,
we always like to ensure that we conduct a sufficient skills transfer
as part of any project. Sometimes the project deliverable IS skills
transfer and we can deliver a structured 'Mentor and Review' programme
that ensures your staff get to work with a skilled Test Specialist
who will be able to demonstrate how to use the test tools, conduct
performance tests, etc. For some elements of the mentor programme
a minimum skill level is expected but we can tailor this programme
to suit most situations.back to top
